ROXY ROCA featured in Soul Train “Artist to Artist” Series

It was a huge honor for us to be featured recently in the Soul Train “Artist to Artist” series, including an in-depth interview with ROXY ROCA singer Taye Cannon. It’s a real full-circle moment for us, when we stop to think about all the hours we spent in front of the TV watching people get down to the soul, funk, and R&B hits of the day on the Soul Train TV show. Here’s a little of what they had to say:

There is something about the music that comes out of Texas; it’s an undeniable and sometimes intangible energy, and you just know it when you hear it. From country to blues, to soul and R&B, rock, rockabilly, and hip-hop, the Lone Star State has delivered some of the best music from top artists across every genre and its latest contribution, the soul/funk collective Roxy Roca, is no exception.

With a moniker that pays homage to legendary actress Roxie Roker (aka, Helen Willis from The Jeffersons and mother of rock god Lenny Kravitz), the Austin-based band boasts a sound—and line-up—that perfectly suits the state where everything is bigger, bolder, and louder. Roxy Roca emerged onto the local scene in 2010, spending the better part of the year “shedding and writing songs,” according to front man Taye Cannon. But after their first official performance at an Austin City Limits afterparty, the band hit the ground running, lighting up stages throughout Austin and surrounding areas. The band released their debut CD, Basement Tapes Vol. 1, in 2013.

Roxy Roca describes their sound as “Dynamite Texas Soul,” and after one listen to their new album, Ain’t Nothin’ Fancy (Stag Records), you’ll know for a fact that these cats are serious. Grimy, funktastic, nasty, spectacular jams make up the album, an 11-song collection filled with wildly expansive rhythms, blaring horns, and uninhibited vocals. It’s a hot and sweaty dance party that leaves very little room to catch your breath, and just enough time to throw back a shot of whiskey before you get back out on the dance floor.
