Many thanks to Jason Maguire for the great feature in Through The Lens Magazine on last Saturday’s show at Continental Club in Austin with our good friends Mudphonic. Here’s what he had to say:

AUSTIN – It’s late at the Continental Club in Austin and the music is intoxicating. It’s like a perverted scene straight out of Animal House with a sold out crowd grinding to this funky Bama Tex Mex of a beat band, Roxy Roca. The horn section blowing you down as Christina, on drums, pounds you back into the rhythm. Lead vocalist, Taye Cannon twists you with a sound that can only be described as stuffing Bruno Mars, Otis Redding and James Brown into a cannon and firing into the crowd.

As you look around there is an unusual sight in the crowd. Not one cell phone is out taking pictures or tweeting the owner’s whereabouts. Roxy Roca has a grip so tight locked around everyone that it’s just a mash pit of grooving, grinding hip swinging as they jam the evening away.

Local funkateers unite for space travel, Latin grooves, and the Texas down and dirty. Relative newcomer Holy Child brings something smooth and slightly jazzy to its soul groove, while Roxy Roca’s brass-laden stun funk makes ’em one of the best booty movers ATX has to offer. Costumed congregation the Golden Dawn Arkestra creates a circus-like atmosphere wherein sax man Topaz McGarrigle and some of our town’s most accomplished musicians levitate into another dimension through massive rhythms, spry improvisation, and an obscene amount of glitter.

Old Settlers Music Festival is held April 16-19 at the Salt Lick Pavillion in Driftwood, TX. In 1987, the first Old Settler’s Music Festival was held at Old Settler’s Park, in the Austin suburb of Round Rock. Since then, it’s grown into a nationally-known celebration of Americana and roots music in all its forms-with past headliners including Patty Griffin, Bela Fleck, Doc Watson, Joan Osborne, Bruce Hornsby, Iron & Wine, Alison Krauss, the Avett Brothers, and Robert Earl Keen.
