Big thanks to I Live Music, a cool Telluride, CO-based music blog, for featuring the new ROXY ROCA music video for “Try My Love.”

Sacrificing bells and whistles, the Austin octet come right out of the gate with the right amount of everything – brass overlays, tons of funky rhythm, and a positive yet simple message to tie it all together.

Often nu-soul contributors struggle with digging into the essence of the sonic spirit that drives the genre. Finding that feeling of which this style of music has built and evolved can not be manufactured. It’s not actually discoverable – it finds you. It is simply in you or it isn’t, and you usually have about 3 minutes to prove that to the astute connoisseur. With Roxy Roca it took about thirty seconds for the tight horns, noticeable organ, and affecting vocals from frontman Taye Cannon to register that their is something special this band. Sacrificing bells and whistles, the Austin octet come right out of the gate with the right amount of everything – brass overlays, tons of funky rhythm, and a positive yet simple message to tie it all together. The video shot at The Blackheart in the Silicon Hills features some cool celebrity appearances, and shows these guys know how to put the fun in funky. To be honest, I don’t know much else about Roxy Roca, but they have my attention now.

Thanks to Mike Cortez for this cool write-up of the Free Week 2013 show at Holy Mountain with ROXY ROCA, Money Chicha, and Como Las Movies (ex-Maneja Beto).

Holy Mountain almost seemed like a religious experience as front man Taye Cannon sounded like he was channeling the spirit of James Brown.

As Free Week came to a close no place was rocking more than Holy Mountain. Como Las Movies, Roxy Roca, Money Chicha and Manolo Black kept the crowd moving all night long. Words and photos by Mike Cortez.

Como Las Movies is the new project from Austin’s own Maneja Beto, and with electronic layering over traditional Latin cumbia beats, the crowd couldn’t help but sway their hips. When Roxy Roca took the stage everyone was already loose, and with the power and force of the horns, the building lit up with excitement. The Holy Mountain almost seemed like a religious experience as front man Taye Cannon sounded like he was channeling the spirit of James Brown. Between sets DJ Manolo Black kept the crowd dancing while mixing hip-hop with cumbia and reggaeton. By the time Money Chicha took the stage the venue was so packed you could barely move, but that didn’t stop the audience from dancing. Money Chicha is the side project from members of the famed Grupo Fantasma. With a much smaller band, Money Chicha plays a style of Peruvian psychedelic cumbia blended with a hip moving rhythm of funky intoxicating percussion beats. While there were great shows going on all over town on Saturday night, Holy Mountain was without a doubt the place to be. -Mike Cortez
