ROXY ROCA Welcomes Drummer Christina Comley

ROXY ROCA Welcomes Drummer Christina Comley

We are excited to introduce the newest member of the ROXY ROCA family, drummer Christina Comley. Originally from the Dallas area, Christina moved to LA to attend Musicians Institute in 2010. Since then, Christina has called Austin home for the past year, paying her dues at clubs up and down 6th Street and all over town.

Christina will make her live debut with the band this week at Soul Monday at The Roost. This local show will serve as a great warm-up before heading out on the road later this week for shows in New Orleans at Balcony Music Club and Shamrock as well as our much-anticipated main stage set at BayFest 2014 in Mobile, AL with Ludacris and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony.

Why the change from current drummer Paul Kresowik? Guitarist Errol Siegel said, “Paul was looking to go a different direction. We’re proud of the things we accomplished together, but sometimes you have to shake things up and look for something new. We respect that and wish Paul nothing but the best, whatever he decides to do next.”

Paul said, “It’s been a great year with the band but it’s time for a change for them and for me. I’d like to thank Taye Cannon, Errol Siegel, Bob Villwock, Nikolas Bouklas, Ryan Allen, Thomas Hays, Roger Wüthrich, Houston Rawls, and Royce Phillips Jr. for the good times and memorable shows. I wish them all the very best!  Special thanks to everyone who supported me and the band in person and from afar this past year. I’ll still be in Austin playing shows and enjoying life and will look forward to seeing you all around town or down the road.”

Come out to a show soon and help us welcome Christina to the band!

Glide Magazine review of show at The Parish with Lee Fields and ROXY ROCA

Glide Magazine review of show at The Parish with Lee Fields and ROXY ROCA

Many thanks to Neil Ferguson from Glide Magazine for the great review of Thursday night’s sold-out show at The Parish with Lee Fields & The Expressions. Here’s what he had to say:

Getting the evening rolling was Austin’s own Roxy Roca. The up-and-coming group is part of a handful of local groups specializing in white-bred soul music that have emerged in the last few years. What sets this group apart from the pack is the tightness and dedication of the band and their frontmant Taye Cannon, who possesses a smoky voice that isn’t so much smooth, but feels gritty, authentic, and is at times reminiscent of British blue-eyed soulsters like Rod Stewart. Despite it only being an opening set, Cannon appeared to be putting everything he had into the performance, enhancing upon his Alabama roots and bearing himself to the crowd with blazing Southern passion. By the end of their set Roxy Roca worked the crowd into a dance frenzy, setting the proper vibe for what would follow.

The Monnalisa Bar at Hotel Sorella in Houston is one of our favorite swanky hangouts in Texas. Our show there this past August was a blast, and this time our good friend Milton Otto was on on hand to snap some great pics to remember it by!

Photos + Video from SoCo Soul Party at The Continental Club with Latasha Lee & The Black Ties and ROXY ROCA

Last month’s SoCo Soul Party at The Continental Club with Latasha Lee & The Black Ties and ROXY ROCA was a sold-out, wall-to-wall dance party, and it was also a family reunion of sorts. ROXY ROCA alumni Ryan Allen (alto sax and bari sax) and Nikolas Bouklas (tenor sax), who now play in Latasha Lee’s killer band, were able to join us on stage for a few numbers. Now THAT’S a horn section! Here are a couple photos from our set (thanks Milton Otto!) plus a couple bonus cell phone snaps. Extra bonus: a cool video clip of “Try My Love” (also thanks to Milton).
