Influential NYC-based BlackBook Magazine and respected underground podcast Active Listener got together to take on the enormous task of listening to tracks from all 1200+ bands from SXSW 2013 to curate a list of what they considered to be the top 20. We were thrilled and humbled to see ROXY ROCA right at the top of their list! Here is how Eli Kooris from BlackBook describes the process:
I had some help from friend and music aficionado Aaron Albrecht, aka Active Listener, who has managed a respectable underground podcast covering South by Southwest and a wide variety of musical genres for the past few years now. We attacked the exhaustive task of listening to all this year’s 1,200+ bit torrents in this fashion: listen to each song once, for at least a minute. Pull your favorites, none of which could have made my list last year or are well-established artists (sorry Zion I, we still love you though). Then do the same thing with your favorites until you have narrowed the list down to around 60 or 70 tracks. Then we compare our lists, include the tracks that match and campaign for our other favorites through repeat plays, extended BBQ meals, shots of bourbon, and bouts of yelling.
SXSW might be over, but the soul music is still flowing on Red River! We have put together a soul dance party for you on Friday, March 22 at The Mohawk. Check out this line-up: The Inverters (10pm), ROXY ROCA (10:45pm), and The LaRues (12am). DJ Cut a Rug (9pm) opens and closes the show and spins between bands. We had a great day recording at Big Orange Studio in Austin last week, courtesy of our new good friends at Converse Rubber Tracks. Engineer Aaron Bastinelli made sure everything moved along smoothly and we walked out with some great new b-sides and bonus tracks to go along with our new record. SXSW 2013 is officially ON and we got our week started right last night at the Rocket Lawyer party at Copa Bar & Grill on South Congress.
